Provide the names of two people who would be willing to provide a character reference, they must have known you for at least 2 years (not be a relative), one of these should be a present or previous employer.
Legal Requirement
  • Hold a full UK or European Union unrestricted driving licence.
  • Have held a licence for a total of at least four years out of the past six.
  • Have not been disqualified from driving any time in the last four years.
  • Be a 'fit and proper' person to have your name entered on the register.
  • Pass the two qualifying practical exams within two years of passing the theory test.
  • Apply for registration within 12 months of passing your final part 3 exam.
Qualification Process
The ADI qualification process is in 3 parts

PART 1  An IT based theory test & video clip hazard perception test

PART 2  An eyesight test followed by a practical test of your driving technique

PART 3  A practical test of your ability to instruct

You must pass all three parts of the examination within two years of passing the theory test (Part 1). There is no limit to the times you can attempt the Part 1 theory test, but you are only allowed three attempts at the Part 2 practical test and three attempts at the part 3 instructural ability test.

PART 1
We offer a distance learning course, home study pack with full support, classroom facility training also available. All training materials supplied are current and up to date.

The theory element is split into four sections of  25 questions however you must obtain a minimum 20 question correct in each section and an overall pass mark of 85%

You have 90 minutes to complete this part of the test the Hazard perception element is made up of 15 scoreable hazards in 14 video clips, up to 5 points per hazard, a score of 57 out of 75 is required to pass.
PART 2
We offer a full training course, and a Part 2 study pack. We recommend that the course runs for approximately 20 hours depending on the clients abilities. This can be done as a block of in smaller 2 hour time slots.

The practical test consists of an eyesight check, you must be able to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5m (57mm font, old style) and 26.5m (50mm font, new style) The eyesight check will be carried out prior to parts 1 & 2. Test of driving techniques, this is a far more difficult test than the 'L' test It is of an advanced nature and a very high standard of competence is required. You must show that you have enough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety and that you can apply them in practice. At the start of the test you will be asked questions on basic vehicle safety, based on a Show Me / Tell Me format.

The test will last approx 1 hour.
PART 3
We offer a full training course, and a part 3 study pack
We recommend that the course runs for approximately 40 hours depending on the clients abilities. This can de done in block or in smaller 2 hour time slots.
This test is to ascertain your ability to teach, you will have to instruct a pupil at two different stages of their training. The test lasts 1 hour and you are expected to teach two 30minute phases. Both parts of the test must be passed.
Check-Test
Not happy with your current grade or have a check-test coming up and wish to improve your standards and earning potential, a full assessment can be given and further training as required.
Cardington Grade 'A' Course
The Cardington Special Test is specifically for Approved Driving Instructors, who as part of their continued professional development (CPD) want to demonstrate that they have a high standard of driving competence, which they wish to maintain.

The test involves
The test is carried out at the DSA Training Centre by one of the specialist DSA training staff.

The test involves about a 90 minutes drive on all types of roads, including a motorway and in a variety of traffic conditions. ADI's have to demonstrate a positive, courteous attitude and the ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely, systematically and smoothly .A high consistent standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective observation, anticipation and planning is expected.

A full driving assessment will be given to determine the length of training course required.
DSA LGV Instructor Training
LGV Instructor training for assessors or Instructors DSA Parts 1, 2 & 3.

Use of the schools car for parts 2 & 3 tests will be charged out at £30.00 per hour

CARDINGTON GRADE 'A' COURSES charged at £40.00 per hour

EXAM FEES are paid directly to the D.S.A.
